Spain sets deadline for public sector mandatory e-invoicing

Tuesday 17th June, 2014

The Spanish government has set a deadline of 15th January 2015 for mandatory public sector e-invoicing.

This deadline means that all public sector invoices will have to be submitted and transmitted electronically through a general entry point which records a copy of the submission date. It will ensure that in the event of late-payment by the administration, the corresponding interests will still be paid.

All public administrations are already required to forward information on invoices received to the Tax Authority.

According to the Spanish government, the move will enhance security, streamline the invoicing process and result in savings of around EUR 3.48 per invoice issued, EUR 2.78 of which corresponds to the administration and EUR 0.70 to the issuing entity. In total, some EUR 5.5 million a year will be saved, while the time taken to process invoices will be reduced by around 80 percent.
