| Domain Registry warns of fake invoices |
|
Tuesday 3rd November, 2015 London based domain registry CentralNic, has issued a warning this week of a postal fraud campaign targeting its domain name registrants and registrars. CentralNic has received copies of several fake invoices sent by post to its domain registrants, which claim to be issued by them. The fake invoices direct the recipient to remit payment to bank accounts that are not associated with CentralNic. Rather than an attempt to obtain transfer authorisation, as in the case of “Renewal Notice” scams, these invoices are simple fraud by impersonation. To help identify these fraudulent invoices, the company has provided an example written in German with English in the document header and footer, that sought payment of €55. CentralNic recommends that, if its customers receive an invoice like this, please send them a copy so they can pass it on the police, who are investigating the case. |
