Councils in England are still struggling to identify and limit the level of fraud within their systems as a new report by the Audit Commission highlights fraud worth £178m last year. And, although the total number of fraud cases dropped by about 15%, the average value of each case rose.

Aberdeen City Council has announced significant budget savings of £5 million due in part, to their new financial management system from Advanced Business Solutions (Advanced).

Advanced has allowed the Council’s 400-stong finance division to exert considerable control over budgets to maximise efficiencies, which has contributed to the Council’s significant savings. In recognition of the great strides the Council has taken, the finance team recently scooped two prestigious Accounts Payable News Awards.

According to the latest Global Fraud Report by Kroll, the number of organisations struck by fraud has risen by 9% over the last year. Much of the rise has been put down to a sharp rise in supply chain related issues. With the worldwide economy still struggling its way out of recession, and with less scrupulous companies and individuals attempting to think creatively around trying to "do more with less", it's a problem that's likely to continue to rise.
