The virtual currency Bitcoin (it only exists digitally), has been used for the first time in a UK pub. Earlier this week customers were able to buy a pint of their usual with the new currency. The half pint cost £1.55, which works out as 0.0202 Bitcoins (BTC) – in other words an exchange rate of almost £77 for a single Bitcoin. The currency can be used in any country irrespective of the domestic currency.

To create anything new, you need the right mixture, the right environment. This is precisely the case with the current changes in payments and banking. The prolonged adverse economic background, coupled with a reluctance from traditional banking sources to lend - has led to an increase in innovation, sometimes from areas not directly previously associated with the financial sector.
Take Facebook for example. Not necessarily the first place which comes to mind when thinking of banking - but with the rise of key apps - that's unlikely to be the case for much longer. Instabank in Russia, CommBank in Australia and ICICI bank in India - have all seen the potential for side-stepping traditional routes and have tied apps to Facebook.

Towards the end of a long conference I was a little unsure about the wisdom of sitting in on a session entitled “57 Ways to Increase AP Success” at the IFO Fusion event yesterday. Not five, not ten, but 57 different ways…I hoped there’d be coffee…Still, it was an intriguing title and if there are 57 different ways – I want to be sure I know them too. As it turned out, I wasn’t the only one, as the room soon filled to capacity.

At least, they do at the Disney Institute..As I sat listening to keynote Susan Pearsall of the Disney Institute at the IFO Fusion event, two things occurred to me. Firstly, how sometimes we’re so caught up with talking about automation and technology – it’s easy to lose sight of communication as the driver of any process improvement – and secondly – how it’s quite difficult to eat an egg filled croissant with your hands… I definitely could have improved my processes by not missing the knife and fork section…..

When I think of some of the best collaborations - Simon & Garfunkel, Noel & Liam.......Blair and Brown (?) - in all cases, the whole is better than the sum of its parts. And quite often neither party is aware of the magnified power and strength they are able to generate together - at least not until it's too late and the solo album bombed..
